No democracy in Africa

Am I the only person who has noticed the callous disdain of leadership in Africa? Why does corruption, fraud and holocaust occur after elections in some countries? I am not a doomster. However, what is actually happening in Africa needs to be condemned in the strongest terms. Africans fought colonisers tirelessly with the hope that if we elect our own leaders they would serve us.It is not democratic that one can be a ruler for more than 20 years – look at Zimbabwe. It is not democratic that innocent people die simply because two people have political differences – look at Kenya. It is not democratic that certain groups undermine the independence of the judiciary system – look at the ANCYL and the Jacob Zuma case. The above proves that Africans can’t be democratic, principled and provide good governance. One can’t help but find it difficult to believe that a man like Robert Mugabe, who fought hard for the independence of Zimbabwe, is now ruining the country. It started when he was voted into power as a populist who then failed to deliver to the poor, and then he became a despot.

Over and above is the fact that this despot can’t vacate the position of the presidency. Why? I think Mugabe is afraid that he might be prosecuted for violating the human rights of civilians in that county. Of course the Zimbabwean judiciary system might not do this, but the world court in The Hague is bound to impose trial on this culprit.

Hypocrisy of democracy

On the 29th of March, Mugabe will enter the election race alongside his opponents, Morgan Tsvangirai and Simba Makoni. Common sense dictates that Mugabe will emerge triumphant. Morgan has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he can’t win against Mugabe.

Makoni, who was minister of finance and economic development in Mugabe’s cabinet from 2000 to 2002, faced strong opposition during the Economic Change in Zimbabwe in the early 2000s as his policies contradicted those of the rest of the Zanu-PF party.

Simba served for many years in Mugabe’s government and a logical question then is: did Simba not realise that Mugabe was doing no good for the country? I think Simba realised that his political future was vilified in the ruling party, and that’s why he decided to move away from Mugabe.

Mugabe will stay in power. Everything that is happening in Zimbabwe is being done under the hypocrisy of democracy. According to me democracy is not liberal in that country. And all this ultimately brings all Africans to be viewed as failures in leadership.
