Today we celebrate an European Tradition of the passing of an year.
One year means the rotation of the Earth around the sun, something that has been discovered by Europeans (Galileo Galilei is the one who set the foundations) and practiced by Europeans for centuries. An year without Europe would be a dark year on a dark planet.
