One law for them, one law for the rest of us -The Israeli government has this week voted to heavily restrict approval of new immigrants who want to convert to Judaism and move to the Jewish state. The bill, initiated by Israeli Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit, approved by Israeli lawmakers, will take away the interior minister’s power to approve the immigration of groups who claim Jewish descent, instead requiring a vote by the entire Israeli cabinet. Sheetrit himself was born in Morocco, in 1948 and immigrated to Israel when he was 9. The new law is deigned to exclude those who Jews view as “converts” to their religion, rather than those born of the Jewish race, specifically through a jewish mother, as defined by the Jewish scriptures. According to the cabinet communiqué, it was decided that the Interior Ministry “would issue entry visas for groups regarding conversion and the acquisition of citizenship only with government approval and in accordance with special criteria.”
