An Ethiopian immigrant was charged with murder Monday in Los Angeles after the body of his 75 year old father was found in a suitcase last week in western Fresno County.
Police say the body belonged to the father of Mulushewa Tebedge, 33, who also is charged in the death of his sister, whose body was later found near a highway in Santa Barbara County.
The father, Getahun T. Reta, 73, and the sister, Zerfie Tibeje Getahun, were stabbed to death, Los Angeles district attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said. Prosecutors are determining whether to seek the death penalty in the crimes. A motive still was under investigation, officials said.
Reta’s body was found by Caltrans workers and a California Highway Patrol officer the morning of Nov. 20 along Interstate 5 near Kamm Avenue.
The criminal complaint alleges that the crimes occurred Nov. 18 and that Tebedge used a knife to kill his father and sister.
Los Angeles police believe the killings occurred in the family’s apartment on West 39th Street in South Los Angeles. Tebedge was arrested last Wednesday after jumping from a second-story window at the residence during a follow-up investigation involving his father’s dismembered remains, which were found a day earlier in suitcases and a duffel bag near the I-5 in rural Fresno County, authorities said.
